After years of traveling all around the US multiple times a year (in 2014 i flew 11 times!) i can proudly say that i have packing down to a science. Now your probably thinking, yes we all know how to pack, just one click over to Pinterest and we can find out how to efficiently pack a suitcase. Well, yes this is true. There are hundreds of bloggers out there who give great advice on packing. I on the other hand, have mastered something a little more difficult…..packing a weekend trip into one small backpack.
A couple years ago i found two airlines that provide ridiculously cheap airline tickets, Spirit Airlines and Frontier Airlines. Now let me disclaim that these two airlines are not the creme de la cream of airline travel…they are the rutt of the bunch. When i fly to the east coat i often use Delta because there flights are amazing, and they have so much free entertainment. But when i need to travel for a short amount of time i use Spirit or Frontier. The downside, is that you have to pay for a carry-on bag ( ya know those cute roller bags everyone uses)! Hence my expertise on packing light and avoiding those extra charges. Here are five tricks i have used to pack light and avoid going over budge.
1-Travel size. Travel size toiletries are the absolute best when packing light. Many stores like walmart and Target now sell a wide variety of travel size toiletries to suit everyone’s needs. I usually put mine in a ziplock back, making it easy to transfer into the bathroom oppose to just throwing it into my backpack.
2-Pick the basics. Every girl out there has a small travel size make up bag, and if you do not they are practically everywhere. The bag shown in the picture is actually from Forever 21, H&M also sells small travel bags. If you do not want to spend any extra money, a ziplock bag would also do the trick. When it comes to carrying make up, its oh so easy to want to carry your entire collection. I stick to the basics. My Nars sheer glow, Nars concealer, Anastasia dip brow, a travel size primer from Sephora , a beauty blender and three of my favorite lipsticks. There really is no need to carry multiple of anything. Remember the goal is to pack light! Also for all you eye shadow girls, eye shadow crayons are amazing, and they take up a lot less space than an entire pallet, they also travel better.
3-Clothing. In the photo you will notice that i have three tops, one pair of black thermal leggings and one pair of jeans, that’s it. The smartest way to pack is to think of outfits that can be worn multiple ways. For example, i am going to Chicago, so of course i have to pack warm clothes and layers. I picked two solid colored sweaters and a patterns top. The black sweater can be worn with the plaid shirt. plaid on the inside and black on top. i can pair this with jeans or black leggings. There you go one outfit complete. The second, i could decide to wear the black sweater on its own, or the plaid on its own, or pair the plaid and mustard sweater. This saves me so much space, because everything has to fit into this small backpack.
4-Shoes. I do not pack my shoes i wear them ! i will be wearing my super comfortable Nikes all weekend. I checked the weather and i should be able to get away with sneakers all weekend without getting frostbite. I also made sure that the shoe i picked would go with my outfit choices. But again we want to save space, and wearing and bringing one shoe will do the trick. In the warmer months it is easier to pack multiple sandals that are slim in shape, and will not take up a lot of space. The winter months are a little tricker but it is still doable to wear a comfortable pair of boots with every outfit. Be sure to try on your entire outfit with a shoe and make sure that it will match with whatever your outfit choices are.
5-Extra info. Again the key is packing smart. i use a small mesh bag from target to store my underwear, bra and socks. Pajamas can be rolled tight with the rest of the clothes and fit perfectly. I also put all of my electronic cords in a ziplock bag. So my phone charger, ipod/pad charger are stored together so that they are not floating around or tangled. I usually do not carry around my backpack on my day to day activities, so i pack a small side bag that can carry my wallet and phone, and can be folding easily into my backpack.
I can not stress to you how much easier this process has made my life. I have saved so much money by not checking in a bag, especially when i am only traveling for 3 days. I reallly hope that this post was helpful. If i forgot to add anything or you have any questions feel free to comment and i will answer as soon as possible. Traveling does not have to be expensive, it is very much possible to cut cost and spend within your limit.
