I’ve always been an avid reader. As a preteen, I would read anything Austinian repeatedly. In my teenage years, I found myself at the edge of my seat, completely absorbed by murder mysteries. I still enjoy reading books within these genres, but these days I’ve found myself navigating towards more informational reading – articles that help navigate the confusing channels of adulthood.
Along with my love for fashion, I’ve always been drawn to anything self-help related. It was no surprise to me when I chose a degree in counseling for my bachelors and psychology for my masters. I love to acquire knowledge that can improve and positively influence my daily living, as well as passing on said beneficial information to my beloved friends.
Now that I’m a few years shy of 30, I want to be prepared, I want to be inspired and I want to create helpful avenues and useful ideas. Of course, no amount of time spent reading articles, books, and newspaper clippings can prepare you for an unknown future. But as the old saying goes, knowledge is power! If what I read does not apply to me at the moment, it may apply to someone whose path I have yet to cross. So, if not as a way to prepare, inspire or forge new ideas for myself, I see it as a way to start a conversation with the people around me and those I’ve yet to meet.
- I stumbled on this website through Pinterest (no surprise there), and I was immediately obsessed. The first thing that greets you at the top center of the home page is, ” Honest conversations about work and life.” If you are a woman trying to balance work and life, trying to decide on a career, or trying to start anything new and scary, this is the site for you. The articles range from networking and entrepreneurship , career growth, authenticity and passion, and personal branding . Although this site is geared towards women, I strongly feel that men can benefit from the information presented to it’s readers. Career Contessa inspires me daily! It presents a class of women through various stages in their careers and lives who have started from the bottom, built companies and fulfilling lives, and are now masters of their craft.
- Nerd wallet is a life saver, period. I’m quite late in the game with money management, budgeting, and credit cards (the embarrassing list goes on). What I love about this site is the simple language used that even a financial amateur like myself can understand and follow. Best of all, it’s all free advice! You don’t have to pay for a seminar or take a lengthy financial background quiz. The information on Nerd Wallet is aimed at a wide audience, from college freshmen trying to figure out credit card options to first-time home owners figuring out the nuances of a mortgage. If you’re not like me and would rather not spend hours sifting through articles, at best it’s a quick reference to your fiscal questions . There’s also a great personalized question section towards the bottom of the home page where an expert will try to answer any questions you submit.
- I found this site through Career Contessa. My first thought when I clicked on the link was that it was going to be some weird, hippie site telling me not to shower or teaching me how to make my own toiletries…nope, dead wrong. I read through this site every single day, there is just so much information to learn! Mind Body Green is a wellness and healthy living website where you can find articles about, boosting your immune system, over coming anxiety, and relationship advice . What I love most is that there isn’t an overabundance of expert jargon; yes, there are articles written by experts, but the majority of what the site offers are shared experiences from individuals for the benefit of others. No topic is off base on this site, which means there is something for anyone who is hungry for information.
